YouTube has just announced they will now have a “YouTube News” video to keep users abreast of the latest news from the site. The vlog is hosted by Peter Zottolo. And while it’s a step in the right direction, it lacks some key essentials that would really make it useful.
As it stands, you can see the first installment on the YouTube blog and on Zottolo’s own channel. It works “fairly” well on the blog because there is a text summary below, along with links to the relevant pages talked about in the vlog. On Zottolo’s own channel, however, no text or links exist, of course. Zottolo’s channel is set up like everyone else’s, and so it’s not possible.
As long as YouTube continues to put the vlog onto its own blog with the links and the text summary, it could add at least some value. Simply watching a talking head, however, doesn’t seem like a very effective way to present the information. There needs to be screenshots, some screencasting (a video of someone working live on a computer screen), and possibly even some mini-tutorials in order for it to really convey the information.
Zottolo seems to have the right blend of humor, mild irony, and polished delivery, but the information itself calls out for various modes of presentation.
